Work out what actually lands in your account — Income Tax, National Insurance, pension and student loan, all accounted for.
Scotland has different Income Tax bands; National Insurance is the same everywhere.
We assume this comes out of your pay before Income Tax is worked out (a "net pay arrangement"); the usual setup for workplace pensions.
You usually stop paying National Insurance once you're over State Pension age.

Income Tax is calculated after your Personal Allowance and any pension contribution (which comes off your pay before tax, under the standard "net pay arrangement"). National Insurance and student loan repayments are calculated on your full gross salary, in line with how PAYE actually applies them. If your income is above £100,000, your Personal Allowance is gradually reduced; this calculator applies that automatically.

This calculator gives an estimate based on published 2026/27 rates and standard assumptions; it isn't a substitute for your actual payslip or a formal calculation from HMRC. Figures can change at future Budgets. For guidance specific to your situation, an accountant or tax adviser can help.
