This notice explains what personal information Money Actually collects, why, and what rights you have over it. We've tried to write it the way we'd want it explained to us.
Who we are
Money Actually is the data controller for the personal information described in this notice. You can reach us at hello@moneyactually.co.uk or via our Contact page.
What we collect
If you sign up to the newsletter: your email address, and the date you subscribed.
If you contact us by email or through the site: whatever information you choose to include in your message.
General site usage: as it stands, we don't run analytics or tracking of any kind, so we don't currently collect any information about how you browse the site. If that changes in future, for example, to understand roughly how many people visit and which pages are useful, we'll ask for your consent first and update this notice and our Cookie Policy to say so clearly.
We don't ask for or store any financial account details, National Insurance numbers, or other sensitive personal data anywhere on this site: our calculators run entirely in your browser, and the figures you enter into them are never sent to us or stored anywhere.
Why we collect it, and our legal basis
- Newsletter emails: collected with your consent, so we can send you the newsletter you signed up for. You can withdraw this consent at any time.
- Contact form or email enquiries: used to respond to your question, which is necessary for us to carry out that specific request.
- Site analytics: used on the basis of our legitimate interest in understanding how the site is used and improving it, balanced against your right to privacy.
How long we keep it
Newsletter email addresses are kept for as long as you stay subscribed, and deleted promptly after you unsubscribe. Contact enquiries are kept only as long as needed to deal with your query and for a reasonable period afterwards, in case of follow-up.
Who we share it with
We don't sell your personal information, and we don't share it with third parties for their own marketing purposes. We may share it with service providers who help us run the site, for example, an email delivery service to send the newsletter, or website hosting, but only to the extent needed for them to provide that service, and under appropriate data protection terms.
Some of these providers may be based outside the UK. Where that's the case, we take steps to make sure your information stays protected to UK standards, such as relying on providers certified under recognised data protection frameworks.
Cookies
See our Cookie Policy for full detail on what cookies this site uses and how to control them.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR, you have the right to:
- Ask what personal information we hold about you, and get a copy of it
- Ask us to correct anything inaccurate
- Ask us to delete your information
- Object to how we're using your information, or ask us to restrict it
- Withdraw consent at any time (for example, by unsubscribing from the newsletter)
- Ask for your information in a portable format
To exercise any of these, email hello@moneyactually.co.uk. If you're not satisfied with how we've handled your information, you have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), the UK's data protection regulator.
Children's privacy
Money Actually isn't directed at children, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13.
Changes to this notice
We may update this notice as the site changes, for example, if we start using a new analytics tool or email provider. The date at the top shows when it was last updated.
This page is a general template and hasn't been reviewed by a solicitor. It's a reasonable starting point, not a substitute for proper legal advice; worth having this checked over once the specific tools (email provider, analytics, payment processor for templates) are actually confirmed, so the detail matches exactly what the site does.
